What is classic and skating?
Classic is where skis are parallel, and the ski has a pattern or wax that allows the ski to not slip backwards. Skating is where skis are angled in a v-shape, and the skier pushes off the edges of the skis. Classic is easier to learn, so beginners start with classic. Races are designated for classic or skating.
Do I need a sno-park permit?
You need a sno-park permit for some of the areas we ski. The permit costs $80 including the special groomed trails sticker, which is needed for Cabin Creek. You can purchase a permit at Mountain High Sports or online here.
Where do we get skis?
You can purchase or rent skis from Mountain High Sports in Ellensburg. Older skiers sometimes purchase skis. This allows them to continue skiing into adult life.
What should skiers wear?
Skiing is an active sport. Skiers should wear layers, preferably not cotton. If skiers wear a heavy winter jacket they will often be too warm. Skiers need gloves and a hat. A facemask or buff is the accessory of 2020.
What other equipment do skiers need?
A water bottle for after (or a thermos with hot chocolate). For long skis a small water bottle pack is nice (but nothing too heavy). For some of our early season practices a headlamp is nice.
Is there a limit to the number of practices?
No. We have a suggested number of practices per week. But skiers can do more if they are motivated.
Are practices required?
No. But please recognize that consistent practice is the best way to improve.
What is the cost?
We have suggested donation amounts for each program. If you cannot pay, please do not let that discourage you. We would be glad to help your child participate whether you can pay or not.
What races do we participate in?
We participate in two race series: The Pacific Northwest Ski Association Junior National Qualifiers (JNQ) and the Washington Nordic Cup. The JNQs are more serious and expensive. The Washington Nordic Cup are free or low cost and designed for all levels. The races are on the team calendar
Who can participate in races?
Anyone can participate. Washington Nordic Cup races are great for even beginners. Participation is entirely up to the individual. Some skiers participate in dozens of races, while others do none (and many do an intermediate amount.)
Where can we get uniforms?
We do an order from podiumwear for jackets, hats and race suits. The date of the next order depends on interest. We also have t-shirts and some hats for sale.
Are uniforms required?
No.
Can parents get instruction too?
We would like to have more days where parents can receive instruction as well. With COVID, more parents are going to be at the transporting children so we would like to invite parents to learnt to ski as well. Our ability to provide instruction for parents will depend on our coaches.
